Most adoptees and birth parents know exactly what today is!! It is National DNA Day!! Today we commemorate the day in 1953 when James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, and Rosalind Franklin published papers in the journal of Nature on the structure of DNA. It is also a commemoration of the completion of the Human Genome Project.
Today, I want to celebrate National DNA Day, as an Adoptee and as a human being. I truly feel that we all benefit from doing our DNA. What other way can we adoptees get around closed records, and states that don't acknowledge us? I have said for years, that by opening records you open hearts and minds. I still feel that way, but today we have an added component to that platform - DNA Testing. We will participate in DNA testing until every adoptee is reunited. That's my plan.
At ARSS we believe that every human being should have the right to know their biological history. Genetic genealogy is the wave of our future. It is the only foreseeable way to find our families. At least for now. Not only we adoptees, but for first parents as well, who also deserve to find the children they placed in adoption years ago. We are all adults now, we shouldn't be held back from any biological information, and with DNA testing and testing companies like AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, 23AndMe, FTDNA - we will get there. No doubt.
When we all test, we take the power out of the government's hands, and who of us doesn't mind doing that?? Clearly, I don't. I want all people to be able to know who they are and where they come from. Please celebrate with us this special day, and know that with the combined efforts of DNA testing sites and more of us humans testing, that we too can know, and love the families who brought us into this world. Please send in your spit today. For us all.
**ARSS has our own DNA Project called 'The Best Genes You'll Ever Wear'. This program is helped along by true Angels who give gifts in order for us to keep our shelves full of kits, so that we may be able to help our ARSS community. Thank you!
