May the DNA Be Ever In Your Favor

April 25th is National DNA Day, it is a holiday celebrating the day in 1953 when James Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature, describing the structure of DNA. Though we adoptees see it as so much more than just a "structure" because DNA is the biggest puzzle piece in our journey to reunion, it is our life line. Some of those in the non-adopted world scoff at the idea of "big brother" having their DNA. For us, we say "have at it"!!

We here at ARSS fully support EVERYONE testing their DNA. With more DNA in all databases, the more likely an adoptee is able to connect with a biological family member. That is why we ask almost monthly, on all social media platforms, to upload your Raw DNA to GedMatch and from tests done on DNA sites: AncestryDNA, MyHeritage or Family Tree DNA, please upload your results to all. The more you spread around the better. And this way, you don't have to pay for additional tests, one and done, and then share amoung additional platforms. The only exception is AncestryDNA. They don't accept uploaded Raw DNA from other sites.

GEDmatch states on thier website, "GEDmatch exists to provide DNA and genealogy tools for comparison and research purposes. It is supported entirely by users, volunteers, and researchers. DNA and Genealogical research, by its very nature, requires the sharing of information.” So please, share your information because you never know who it may help or who you may find!

Please know we understand the apprehension to providing your DNA, but we have no better way of finding our first families until we are all granted full access to our information. So until our human rights as adoptees are no longer in question, we will continue to ask you to provide your DNA and join us in pushing others to share as well! Because either with or without your permission, we will keep pushing forward!

In support of everyone sharing their DNA and National DNA Day, on April 25th we will be kicking off an Ancestry DNA Kit Giveaway. Anyone can enter, but they must either enter on our Facebook and/or Instagram accounts by a few rules:

1) Living in the US

2) Follow/Like Us

3) Tag a friend in the comments of the post

We hope this is one step towards promoting the importance of DNA testing for us adoptees! May the DNA be ever in your favor!
