Happy New Year, to all of you out there in the Triad world.
As 2018 winded down, we were amazed at what we have been able to accomplish, and what a growth driven, wonderful year we have had. We did so many unique things, we had so many “finds” and reunions. All of which was fantastic, however, it doesn't feel like it was enough, we want to do more. We feel we have a higher purpose, and we feel the time is right - right now to make some noise, to make our voices LOUDER!! No more sitting idly by, and let the world around us continue to dictate if THEY FEEL WE should or should not have the RIGHT to know - well US! The right to our own birth certificates!
We are hoping our community will help us in being involved in making our unique voices heard! We started the #AdopteesRightsMatter petition in hopes of garnering lots of signatures and move forward. Well, it wasn't as easy as we thought. That being said, we still gained 500 plus people, who otherwise most likely wouldn't look at a petition. We thank ALL of you who did sign.
We have decided that 2019 is going to be a year of changes. We are going to be focusing on raising awareness, and making our voices heard even LOUDER for equal rights for we, adoptees. With all the "movements" going on these days, I would be remiss if we didn't include ourselves in this revolutionary time frame. The time has definitely come for Open Records for all adoptees. We can no longer sit back. We need to add #AdopteeRightsMatter to the list, along with #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. Just as those grass roots movements are important to our society, #AdopteesRightsMatter is just as important, we too, need to be loud.
Ours is a civil liberties issue. Do we really know what Civil Liberty means? It is the state of being subject only to laws established for the good of the community, especially with regard to freedom of action and speech. Well clearly OUR civil liberties are not accounted for in that statement. Our forefathers meant for us to have: personal freedoms, freedom of conscience, freedom of press, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, the right to security and liberty, freedom of speech, the right to equal treatment under the law. Hmmm, let's take that part and think about it.
How on God's green earth, did the lawyers and policy makers EVER think that keeping adoptees in the dark about their own heredity, their own parentage, their own families, how did they ever think this was fair or just? It's not. There are 10's of thousands of adoptees just like you and I, who don't want to rock the boat. Who don’t feel they should! Well we are done with that! Here we are ready to make our cause known. This is our time!!
In 2019, we will be partnering with other adoptee groups, so that WE can make our voices heard and together achieve what is rightfully ours, our own Original Birth Certificates. This is a highly unjust cause of action on the part of the government. We have NONE of those civil liberties listed above except for our voices. Let us stand together. Let us create a movement we can be strong in numbers as we have all so recently seen. Adoptees Rights Matter. We want everyone in this beautiful country of ours to come together and finally stamp out 'secret keeping'. As we have found, it is not helpful for anyone, and when there are secrets - lies follow very close behind.
2019, We pledge to stand together with like minded people who are committed to changing our laws. We here at ARSS believe our voices need to be heard! Let’s do this!
